My students need 5 digital cameras with memory cards and backup batteries to explore photography. They will then need printer ink to print their photos.
My 5th grade students will be learning about photography in art class by critiquing the work of famous photographers such as Ansel Adams, Gordon Parks, Cindy Sherman, and many more. What better way to truly understand photography and composition than by taking photographs themselves?
My students are enthusiastic lovers of art.
The school I teach in has a high poverty rate which limits many of my students' experiences. There is also great diversity in my school from race and ethnicity to ability levels and experiences. This diversity provides many opportunities for students to learn from each other.
My Project
This unit on photography will allow all of my 5th grade students to explore a media that is easily adapted to any ability level. Students will be able to critically explore their school environment through the lens of a camera. After photographing their environment, my 5th graders will share with each other their favorite and most successful photograph. The printer ink will make it possible for student work to be printed so they may take home their photos to share with their loved ones.
Many of my students will take photos at some point in their lives.
This unit will give them the confidence to know that they have the ability and knowledge take photos like other great photographers. The digital cameras will be used by subsequent 5th grade classes. This project has the potential to reach hundreds of students over time and will hopefully inspire a love of photography and art. Thank you for your consideration in supporting these well-deserving students!
