My Students: “My contention is that creativity now is as important in education as literacy, and we should treat it with the same status.”~ Sir Ken Robinson.

Our elementary public school is high achieving and forward thinking. We have a strong commitment to preparing our students for the technology rich world of today and tomorrow. As their art teacher, I'm always looking for ways to stimulate creative problem-solving give my students technology rich ways to express themselves. What can be better for this purpose than a digital storytelling studio with enough cameras to give all my students an opportunity to participate in this 21st century medium for visual literacy.

My Project: My program was recognized with a national innovation award last year for the engaging technology rich instruction and art production available to my students. My students need one last digital camera to complete our Stop-Motion animation stations so everyone will get a chance to tell their stories. I want to continue to grow our high quality program with this camera to complete our digital storytelling stop-motion animation stations. This will give our students more access to a hands on video or animation experience that will encourage teamwork, collaboration, and creative problem-solving.

A digital storytelling studio will give students a chance to showcase their learning, celebrate their discoveries and instruct others with their knowledge. They can demonstrate their learning to authentic audiences and practice digital citizenship as they share their finished work on a potentially global stage.

Don't we all need a digital storytelling studio? hide»

"I love hearing about the project! Wow, alien invasion in the art room, what a cool theme! I have a former student who graduated from the Art Institute in Kansas City and she took classes in stop-motion animation too.... it's really a great skill to learn. As you said, the many problem solving strategies students experience, the teamwork, and the fun of creating something..... all so important. I hope you continue to have fun with this project. Art Rocks! Ann Renee"

Dear Peter Heckman, Ann Renee Lighter, Shane Stevenson, Gennafer Porch, Heather Halloran, Brenda Tegert, Tricia Fuglestad and Anonymous Donors,

Thank you so much for the generous gift to help fund a digital camera for my art room. Your gift has helped complete our stop-motion animation stations. This means that students can work in small groups to create animated videos. My students are so excited they can hardly contain themselves!

I have been trying to build my resources for this project over the past few years. I've attempted this lesson with bigger groups and fewer cameras and found that the experience was less hands and harder to find success. This additional camera allowed my students to work in groups of 3 or 4 which it much easier for this precise and detailed work.

This year students created clay aliens for their stop-motion animation. They are each creating a sequence in their groups to illustrate an alien invasion in the art room. The final movie will piece together all their scenes to make one alien invasion in the art room movie.

This project challenges students to use their 21st century skills of communication, collaboration, and creativity. This is a learning experience whether or not the movie is successful. Learning to work in groups, express ideas clearly, and creatively problem-solve are life skills they need to cultivate. Thank you again for believing in arts education and our project. We are very touched to have had your support.

With gratitude,
Mrs. Fuglestad

"I'm so glad that your project is working out, and happy to be able to help in this way. I have been an art teacher for 36 years and it is a wonderful profession. If I had to choose, I would do it all over again. You sound like a great teacher and it gives me hope to know that there are individuals such as yourself, with the creative enthusiasm to carry on this part of education that is SO important. Best wishes for success and fun with this project. Ann Renee LIghter"

Dear Peter Heckman, Ann Renee Lighter, Shane Stevenson, Gennafer Porch, Heather Halloran, Brenda Tegert, Tricia Fuglestad and Anonymous Donors,

I feel like a very fortunate person! I can't begin to tell you how your acts of generosity and kindness have made me feel. My students are going to have a ball inventing stop motion animations in class and they will have you to thank for making this possible. I just returned from the national art teacher's conference and heard many stories of unsupported art programs and underfunded classrooms. It's people like you that make all the difference for teachers and students. Thank you for joining me in caring about the arts, education, and our children.

With gratitude,
Mrs. F

"I gave to this project because I watched "Waiting for Superman" and I am a believer of the arts. I believe creative outlets for children lead them to be more outgoing, stay out of trouble more and ultimately become more successful in life, especially if they can master at something. Good luck to your class and I hope they achieve their dreams!"
