Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I teach a class of special needs preschoolers at a rural, Title I school. These children have a variety of mental, physical, language and motor delays. Along with having developmental delays, the children are also economically disadvantaged. Eleven out the thirteen children receive free lunch. They have very little exposure to books and literature in the home. My proposal would help to alleviate this problem. We use a curriculum called, "Read it once, Read it twice, Read it once again." This program focuses on a particular children's book for four or five weeks, relating lessons that will enhance their cognitive, social, language, and fine/gross motor skills. We read the book each day and the children become very familiar with the story, characters, actions and ideas associated with the book. At the end of the unit I need to send home a copy of the book to each child so that these skills can be reinforced in the home. By the time the book goes home, the children should be able to "read" the book to their parents. Although sending the books home is a vital part of the success of the unit, money for the books is not included in my budget. A donation of these books would be an incredible gift to these children and families. Any help with this project would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for considering this request.
