It's our only planet, we must do something to preserve it. My students have chosen to do a coastal restoration project to restore native mangrove trees to environmentally stressed areas. Mangroves provide a home to a variety of aquatic organisms, filter run-off and decrease erosion.
Students enrolled in my Marine Science classes in grades 10-12 actively work to cultivate Florida Mangroves.
We are currently growing over 1,000 trees. These students work in the hot Florida sun after school and on weekends to ensure that this project is a success. Last year they planted over 500 mangrove trees. They worked to remove exotic plants that had taken over the area and replaced them with Florida's native treasures, the mangroves.
My Project
We have been fortunate that community partners have stepped up and donated soil, pots and planting materials for the mangrove project. There is no funding available for this project so we rely solely on the kindness of our community for financial support. We would like to document our efforts and send updates to our donors so that they will see the impacts on the restored environment. We would also like to create a display with the pictures so that we can further promote this project so that it may continue to grow each year. To do this we need a camera and color printer.
Mangroves provide a unique habitat for a variety of organisms.
The destruction of this crucial habitat could result in the loss of several key species. Restoring the mangrove forest is essential to the health of our oceans and our planet. We only have this one planet to live on, it is time that we restore what has been taken away. We appreciate your support!
