Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine having a world of information in your hands, with no way to access it. My students have all of the materials they need to succeed at the Academic Decathlon in PDF form, but many of them have no computers at home to access the information.
My students come from many backgrounds.
Some have money at home for extras, while many do not. In my team, students range from those who a 4.0 GPA and are involved in many activities to those with a 2.0 GPA whose only extracurricular activity is the Academic Decathlon, and every combination in between. They are involved, slackers, motivated, and loners- kind of like the Academic Decathlon version of the Breakfast Club.
My students need five e-readers to study their Academic Decathlon materials (which are in PDF form) when computers aren't available at home. These Nooks will enrich my students lives in two ways.
First, the Nooks will give them access to our study materials, allowing them to study at home, on the bus, or in groups at the park. We will be able to meet as a team to study outside the four walls of the school, because we won't be forced to study when the computer lab is open and heated.
Secondly, while the Nooks are checked out to the students, they will have access to many free books through Barnes and Noble. This will increase their reading for pleasure.
Our school is in a high poverty, high crime area. With that comes a high risk of getting involved with a gang. Many of my team members come from homes where parents work multiple jobs to stay afloat, or have no jobs at all due to the economy. They can't afford the cost of printing out all of the materials, let alone the cost of a gadget that they can use from year to year.

Please support our project.
In previous years, we have been able to rely on our school to purchase the materials. We will be able to use the Nooks this year, and in years to come, to study our materials. With this resource, we will be able to make our team a team that truly anyone can participate in. Hopefully we will get these items in time for this year's competition, but if we don't we can use them in years to come. Thank you!
