Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students attend a school in Brooklyn, NY that receives Title 1 Funding (most of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch because of their household income). Our students come from a variety of backgrounds.
Our school believes in inclusion and includes our students with IEPs and our English Language Learners in all of our classes.
This allows for diverse classrooms with all types of learners in the same room, taking the same class.
All of our students take AP Language and Composition in 11th grade.
My Project
In our AP Language and Composition class, we strive to read authors of a variety of backgrounds, cultures, races, and socioeconomic classes. We would like to have students have the opportunity to select a memoir that interests them and read it. We typically use selections of readings and excerpts, so it would be fantastic for students to have an opportunity to read a full-length text.
Since our students are diverse, we would like them to have access to texts by diverse authors.
We would like to give our students the opportunity to read an author of a similar background or learn about other people's experiences by reading a different perspective than their own (based on their choice and preference).
