I teach third grade at a specialty school, whose concentration is supposed to be African history. 100% of our student population is African American. Our school has very limited funding and the funds that we do receive are allocated toward purchasing textbooks/materials to accompany our mandated reading program. While this program does help to build a foundation in reading, I think it is important to supplement this with reading materials that will raise our students' cultural awareness and get us back in touch with our school's focus on African history. This summer I designed a four week interactive unit to teach my students about family structure, values, and traditions in various African cultures through the use of storytelling (folktales) and proverbs. The unit meets Illinois learning standards in Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Social Studies...but it involves the students in much more. The activities presented in this unit would benefit my students by providing opportunities to: -analyze folktales/proverbs with supportive use of non-fiction selections to learn about important cultural aspects (family structure/values/traditions) among different African ethnic groups -strengthen higher level thinking, listening, and reading skills (analysis and compare/contrast) -explore concepts of family, culture, diversity, and similarity -understand the use and importance of storytelling to educate and impart values -use the knowledge gained by this unit to cooperate, plan, and perform a folktale for the purpose of educating others You can help to make this possible. These materials will: -help bring African history back to our school -help strengthen our students' critical thinking skills as well as reading/listening/speaking skills -help increase our students' awareness about culture, diversity, and similarity -help facilitate cooperation and raise students' confidence as they participate in our culminating activity Your assistance in making this possible would be GREATLY appreciated! We will show our appreciation through photos, letters, and an invitation to our culminating performance.
