Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Weather is a part of our lives each day. Our fourth grade curriculum includes the study of weather, but we are lacking the resources. Science is not the same unless it is explored hands-on. Our students would have a greater depth of understanding of weather if we could include experiments.
Our students attend an elementary school with grades K-5 in Arizona.
We live in a rural, impoverished area. The students who I teach have varied backgrounds. There is a large population of children receiving free and reduced lunch. We are considered a Title I school.
Many of our students are English Language Learners. Although many of these students have struggles at home, they want to succeed. Most of our students do not have the opportunity for enriching experiences outside of school.
My Project
Weather is naturally fascinating! I am requesting several weather resources. I will surround my students with the opportunity to experience different weather concepts.
Students will learn about weather forecasting instruments. We will investigate how to properly use the instruments to create our own weather report. Students will be able to complete investigations that are new, challenging and exciting!
Science naturally fosters curiosity and critical thinking.
Unfortunately, many teachers are allowed a minimal time to teach science. Children need science. They need to wonder and explore how the world around them works. As teachers we see the need. We fit as much as we possibly can into our school days, but it is not enough. This project will increase excitement, curiosity, and most importantly the love of science for many years to come!
