Do you remember learning things in school that you thought you would NEVER use? As a science teacher I am constantly getting this type of feedback from my students. I would love to be able to show my students how composting works instead of just talking about it.
I teach 9th - 12th grade students in a small rural community.
The school is one campus comprising PK - 12th grade. There is no gas station or convenient store in this town, only a cotton gin. Many of my students have never been outside this area and many more have never left the state or seen the ocean. This small school, however, does not prevent them from dreaming big and they are always appreciative of opportunities they get to apply their knowledge with hands on experiences. Because the school and community are so small we really see ourselves as a family. Not only will my students be impacted by this grant but really the entire school and community.
My Project
As a teacher, I want to prepare my students for their future. Most of them will one day become like me and you; working, going home to families, and producing lots of trash. Never in history has society been so focused on green living. Reduce, reuse, and recycle. Composting is such an easy way to turn trash into usable product. This compost bin will be accessible to all students on campus. Students will learn how composting works and be able to use the dirt/mulch in campus flower beds or take some home to use. I also plan to have my students prepare lessons for the elementary classrooms so that even the little ones will know what it is. This valuable knowledge that the students gain will more than likely be taken home where parents can create their own composting bin.
This compost bin will benefit students for years to come.
It will be a great learning tool in all my science classes and it is opportunity to bring the school and community together. I have no doubt the knowledge they gain from using this composting bin will be used by them in the future.
