Silverstein & Prelutsky: Getting Hooked on Poetry!

My students need a large collection (19 books in all) of high-interest poetry and other literature, such as "The Lion and the Mouse," by Jerry Pinkney, "A Light In the Attic," by Shel Silverstein, and "A Pizza The Size of The Sun," by Jack Prelutsky.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Our poetry bin is empty! While my students get to choose from many genre bins in our classroom library, we are currently missing many essentials for budding poets.

My 1st graders attend a Title I charter school where many resources do not come standard.

While I have been able to provide many books to feed their love of reading, they are begging for more poetry. Getting my students excited about reading and building confidence is key in building literacy skills in all my students.

My Project

I've requested many "classics" in children's poetry such as "A Light In the Attic" and "A Pizza The Size of The Sun." Having these available for read-alouds, author studies, independent reading, and writing instruction will allow my students to have a broader knowledge-base from which to understand literature. We also need more high-quality, award-winning children's books. Using these books for interactive read-alouds go beyond building phonics skills, they allow my 1st graders to think critically and work on essential skills like comparing & contrasting, summarizing, and noting details.

Many children grow up HATING poetry.

Not only do I want my students to understand poetry, but I also want them to WANT to read it. Poets that stimulate their imagines (Shel Silverstein), and tickle their funny bones (Jack Prelutsky), will help me teach poetry as a fun, desirable genre! Other award-winning literature is essential for interactive read-alouds. These books have been recognized for their excellence and will help my students make text-to-life connections, and lose themselves in a story.
