Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Do you remember how soothing it is to hear your favorite story read aloud? I hope to provide this experience to my students on a daily basis through the establishment of an audiobook listening center.

My students attend a Title 1 charter school in DC.

They are an active bunch of 1st graders who are excited about school. While they are excited about school, they are not very excited about technology because we don't have very much. Most of their access to literature is through traditional means. They love hearing stories read aloud!

My Project

During literacy centers, I try to give my students as many ways to approach reading as possible. As of right now, the only time they hear fluent reading is when I'm reading aloud. Being able to set up a listening center with audiobooks will allow all of my students to listen to the story while reading along. This approach builds vocab and fluent oral reading. Developing these reading skills is critical for my 1st graders...if they don't become strong readers now, they probably never will.

This project gives my students one more path to success.

In 1st grade success includes becoming a strong reader. This success is a foundation to milestones like high school graduation and going to college. Having a listening center available will help my students access literature in new ways and further emphasize the importance I place on reading.
