Do you know how the United States grew from 13 colonies to 50 states? My students need to learn about how the United States grew and changed throughout history. They need access to reliable maps that will challenge them to think about how it grew and why.
My students are all over the board.
I teach students with minimal English Language Skills, behavior issues, learning disabilities, and gifted students. I teach 8th graders so on top of all that they are dealing with hormones. They want to learn and do well and they need access to high quality materials to do so. Our school is on the rural end of our valley and most students have never been outside the valley let alone our state. Our halls are filled with many languages and ethnic backgrounds. My classroom is filled with athletes, dancers, artists, musicians, hunters, readers, intellectuals, and caretakers.
My Project
Imagine studying a map of the Battle of Yorktown or the concept of Manifest Destiny; for many students maps open these big ideas and important concepts up to them. These atlases will help my students access historical maps of the United States. It will help them learn how things have changed and start to answer the question of why. They will look at graphs and charts and learn how to interpret information that isn't spelled out in words, sentences, and paragraphs. Having a class set of atlases will allow my students to work independently and in groups using different maps. Currently my classes share a set of 10 worn and torn books at least once a week. A class set will allow us more freedom in activities and let kids work at their own pace.
There are many worthwhile projects and teachers throughout the country, why choose this project?
Simply my kids need them. We have updated and changed our standards and have little to support my students in their learning goals. My hope is that my 8th graders walk into high school knowing how to look at maps, charts, and graphs and can tell people what information is presented.
