Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the joy a story read by your parents could bring? Most of my students don't.
Don't you love picking up a good book to relax for the evening? Most of my students don't.
Most of my students think reading is boring. With these books in our class library, we can prove them wrong!
I teach in an urban high school.
The majority of my students are low SES and are English Language Learners. So many have to work for basic needs that they have neither the time to go to the library nor the money to purchase books. They don't know what they should be choosing to read, and they asked if I could help them out by having a collection available in my classroom for them.
My Project
"So what can I do to help you all understand conflict and plot better?" I asked.
"We need to read more at home," my students replied.
When my students requested an additional reading assignment to be done at home every six weeks, I just about fainted from shock. I am not accustomed to students showing so much initiative, especially when it comes to reading.
My students didn't grow up with many books in their homes. Most of my students have a couple to no books in English at their houses. If their one stipulation for the project was that I help them choose the books and have them ready for them to check out, I was bound and determined not to let that serve as an obstacle.
I need your help to update our classroom library. Having an engaging classroom library with the latest and greatest titles will not only set an example of what is important. It will empower my students to become more literate. It will set the stage for lifelong learning, for a lifetime of reading.
In an urban setting, the choices for what to do after school are not always the most positive of experiences.
With your generosity and help in acquiring these titles, my students will not only learn that reading can be fun, they will learn that reading is essential in understanding others and their situations.
Please give my students the opportunity that many of their parents could not due to circumstances beyond their control.
You making a difference can make my students readers for life!
