My Students

Please, just listen to me! Several of my students cannot communicate verbally to express ideas, wants, and needs. Some cannot learn simply through teacher instruction. Could you imagine not being able to keep up with peers in a world you are in for 8 hours?

I work with the special education population, grades K-5, in an urban school in Wisconsin.

Many of my students have a difficult time communicating their ideas, wants, and needs to others. As a result, these students aren't heard. Several students do not learn easily by listening to the teacher and participating in activities planned by the teacher. They need individualized and needs specific instruction to understand concepts, school routines, vocabulary, emotions, social interaction skills, and communication skills. The students at my school are kind and have an incredible desire to learn and be heard. However, their disabilities make each day a struggle. None the less, these students continue to love learning and show up each day with a smile!

My Project

I am requesting an iPod Touch. Using the iPod Touch, I can download various applications with activities, games, and exercises that focus on thousands of different areas of learning. Some of these include vocabulary, verbs, emotions, colors, shapes, basic concepts (i.e. big, small, more, less), reading, math, functions of objects, and so much more. Programs for social stories and video modeling are available to help children cope with difficult situations during the school day. These stories can help students learn social skills, academic behavior skills, and can be designed specifically for one student. In addition, programs can be purchased to serve as a communication device to aid in communication for those students who cannot speak. The iTouch is versatile and can be used not only with special education students but with regular education students via connections to a Mimeo.

Currently, the special education budget in my school is unable to fund this purchase.

Not only with this impact ALL students throughout the school, it will allow those with learning and communication difficulties to participate. What greater gift is there than the gift to communicate and be heard? We appreciate everything and anything you can do for our students!
