Do you remember what it was like to pick up a book that you wanted to read but the words were just too hard. Young children have such a desire to be great readers however many times the words are just too hard for them.
I teach in an urban magnet school setting and have twenty-two young primary children reading on many different levels.
In our classroom children range from non-readers to readers of fourth grade level. Weekly I work with five different reading groups on multiple occasions. I have also set personal reading goals for each child. During our literacy block the children have three twenty minute sessions where they choose various reading activities. Individual CD or tape players allow each child to choose the book with the "right fit" for them.
My Project
The children who are just learning to read or are non readers need exposure to all forms of reading. Listening to reading gives these struggling students the best opportunity to hear how the fluency of sentences and pronunciation of words should sound. Providing the students with these resources will allow all of my children the opportunity to listen to books daily. Many of my children do not have the opportunity at home to experience many forms of literature. This will help to enrich their reading experience. I want this program to provide such a spark of enthusiasm in reading that they will be inspired to be voracious readers for the rest of their lives.
It is my desire that all of my children have the opportunity to become life long readers.
I want them to be successful in reading and most of all enjoy it. Listening to great literature will be a wonderful start in this ongoing process.
