Sew Cool: Sewing to Make a Difference

My students need 5 sewing supplies to learn to sew and create items to donate to charity.

My Students

Many of my students have never had the opportunity to touch a sewing machine or sewing tools, much less learn to use them.

Our school does not currently have a home economics class or any other opportunity to help these students learn these skills.

Many of my high school students are at-risk. Our alternative school setting is an excellent place for many of them. Some are interested in fashion, but have never cut fabric or sewn anything. Others want to make blankets for charity. They are excellent kids with big hearts!

My Project

With the sewing machines our students received in a previous donation, they have learned basic sewing stitches and completed simple projects. They are ready to move on to creating items to be donated to charity and need basic notions to do so. We are seeking irons, ironing boards, and thread. We also need a pair of left-handed scissors for our lefty students to help us complete these projects. These projects include receiving blankets for the local hospital, hats and scarves for area families in need, a quilt for our school's adopt-a-family program and blankets for wounded and active soldiers.

Not only are sewing skills important for students to have, but by using those skills to create items, they will learn a whole new sense of self-worth and self-confidence.

Creating something by hand and giving it away to charity will also help them learn the joy of giving. This after-school program will help to empower these students in many ways beyond simply learning to sew!
