Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Education Opens Doors!" my kids chant everyday. In order to get a quality science education I want my students to not just read about science, but to actually experience and "do science" on a daily basis. These experiences will set my students up for success in high school, college, and beyond!

This is my students' first year in middle school.

I teach at a Title 1 inner city school, most of my students are recent immigrants, and about 80% receive a free or reduced lunch. College is something that many of them have never considered, mostly because they don't know anyone who has gone to college. I want to make graduating high school and attending a 4 year university a reality for my 140 students. Science courses are a requirement at most universities, no matter the students' major. The best way to set them up for success is to see how they use science in their daily lives, to think like scientists, and to act like scientists. Without this exposure, my students will be at a disadvantage not only on standardized tests, but also upon applying to jobs and college. School is really the only place they'll get exposure to real science. My students are curious, enthusiastic, and hard working. They would absolutely love the opportunity to look and act like real scientists!

My Project

These lab coats and clipboards will ultimately allow my students to "do science" on a daily basis, in a safe and organized manner. My 140 students will be able to do more labs. We have previously improvised lab coats using trash bags, but lab coats would be not only a safer and more earth-friendly option, but will give my students confidence. If my 6th graders are able to wear lab coats while doing laboratory experiments and scientific investigations, they will feel like real scientists. Ultimately this will help to make science careers and college more of a reality for them as they will be able to feel exactly like real scientists and college students feel like. As we have limited resources, students often rotate through stations throughout the room. I do stations as to conserve resources, and to get my students the most exposure as possible in a 50 minute class period. Clipboards would help to make this process easier, and students will feel like real scientists collecting data.

This project will provide my students with the resources and confidence to "do science" in a real and safe way on a daily basis.

Not only will we be able to to more labs, but this equipment will help my students feel like real scientists therefore making college and careers in science more of a reality for my students. My 140 wonderful students word hard every day, and this project will help to set them up for success in my class, on standardized tests, high school science, college, and beyond!
