Our small charter school has no library, and our public libraries have had their hours and resources cut back dramatically. Many of our students have little or no access to current books.
We have a diverse community of 7th and 8th grade students who come from many cultures and economic backgrounds.
Our charter school works hard to create a safe place for people from such different backgrounds to grow together into a stronger community.
My Project
Some of our kids grow up with no reading material in their homes. The idea of reading for pleasure has not been presented to them. By putting books into students hands and conducting literature circles, we can open whole new worlds. By putting successful books written by authors from their own community in their hands, we can inspire kids to reach for higher heights. Our kids are smart, curious, capable and inspiring; should their futures be limited just because no open public library can be found within 50 miles?
We live in a rural, economically challenged community in the middle of the Pacific.
We are not only challenged by lack of funds and resources, we are also challenged by shipping costs. If we raise money to purchase materials, we often can't cover the costs to get it to us. Others can give our kids the leg up they need through the simple, meaningful gift of books.
