Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of our school's students did not achieve proficient on the state tests last year. Our drama program is in need of scripts that engage the imagination, promote students reading on grade level and learning grade level vocabulary.
My students attend an inner city charter school focused on the Fine Arts in California.
We are a title 1 (low income) school. Our population is primarily Latino and African-American. My students are energetic and love to act out plays and do improvisation.
My Project
Having been a classroom teacher prior to becoming the school's drama teacher I have experienced the student's love of the author Roald Dahl during story time. By acquiring these two scripts my students will have the opportunity to be engaged in stories they love. The students reading fluency and comprehension skills are sure to improve through the numerous repeated readings we will do as we study the script whole class. They will be able to even further their reading fluency through team repeated readings.
Whether or not a child can read at grade level in elementary school will largely determine whether or not the student does well in junior high and graduates from high school.
My greatest hope for my students is that they have the opportunity to do well in high school and have the option of going to college. I hope to inspire not just the love of drama but the love of reading in each of my students.
