Encouraging Reluctant Readers with Graphic Novels

My students need 30+ graphic novels in our library, to help them experience success and pleasure in reading, and to then pave the way for more traditional books.

My Students

Students today are bombarded by images--advertising, television, video games. The idea of pages and pages of printed text is daunting for them, more than a little scary. I'd like to build a bridge from visual culture to reading culture using graphic novels to open the kids up to reading.

My school is a Title I school, where almost all students receive a free or reduced-price lunch.

This means that most are economically disadvantaged. The thing that I've noticed about these kids is that they don't come from a culture of reading--their parents don't read, and they don't see reading as something fun and pleasurable. With the emphasis on improving test scores, reading has become for them more like a chore. I think that with a few good graphic novels to catch their attention, I'll be able to get them into the reading habit and eventually convince them to read books. Not only reading them, but enjoying them, and seeking them out on their own. "Oh, you enjoyed the Maximum Ride graphic novel? Have you read the real Maximum Ride series? It's right over here, and I think it's even better than the graphics! Here, try one."

My Project

These graphic novels will grab the students' attention. They'll go crazy for the illustrations, but they will also be reading, and noticing story arcs and character development, and all the other qualities of written texts. Then, when they are jonesing for the next installment of their favorite series, the librarian (me) and their reading teachers steer them toward books with similar themes, but without the illustrations. Without realizing it, they have taken the bait and are reading for pleasure, and probably will for the rest of their lives.

Helping these students become better readers gives them something they can use for the rest of their lives.

It not only improves their grades and test scores, but also gives them a window into different lives, other possibilities. Please help if you can.
