When you read at home, where do you sit? Perhaps you lounge on a couch, or in a cozy armchair. Maybe you lean against the headboard of your bed, pillows folded against your back. Chances are, if you love books, you create places where you can read that are comfortable and inviting.
Like most inner-city classrooms, mine does not look like a cozy haven for students to curl up with a good book.
The floors are white linoleum. The desks are standard, high school flat tops attached to a hard plastic chair. The windows are covered with bars, and the lights are flickering fluorescent.
Posters, art, and student work have helped to make the room look more inviting, but it still isn't a space where students can feel comfortable as they read.
My Project
Five years ago, my first Donors Choose proposal was funded, and I received bean bag chairs for my classroom. In those years, more than 500 students have passed through my classroom, and our original bean bag lounge has finally been retired. The chairs were so loved and used that they lost all their stuffing and now look like sad, deflated balloons instead of the fluffy, cozy chairs that arrived at our classroom door five years ago.
With your help, we can restock the furniture for the Readers Lounge, where students can chill out with a book they enjoy.
In years past, the Readers Lounge was the favorite area of my classroom.
By helping to fund this project, you'll be making fond memories for the next 500 students who'll enjoy them. Please donate today!
