Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Feed USA's mission is to help children grow, thrive, and better their communities by receiving good nutrition and education. It is also my goal, as a teacher, to help my students learn about good nutrition beginning in kindergarten.
My students live in a very high poverty neighborhood in Texas.
More than 85 percent receive free or reduced lunch. Our school also participates in a weekend backpack of food program, provided by a local food bank. Students come in unaware of nutritional information or how fruits and vegetables are grown. They love the school breakfast and lunches, which may be their only substantial meal(s) of the day.
My Project
I am requesting items to be used in the school garden, and in the classroom when it is too cold to be out in the garden. My class could really use some garden tools that are just the right size for them! They would also benefit from a Growing Kit that includes a watering can, seed packets, and more.
In our classroom, it would be great to have a Root Viewer Kit and a Sprout and Grow Greenhouse, to really see what is happening below the surface of the soil while a plant is growing.
My students were so excited last year when Real School Gardens came in to build a great garden on our elementary campus.
Unfortunately, weeds took over this summer and we need to work together as a class, and as a school, to rebuild the garden.
Please help provide these materials to aid the whole school in this pursuit for years to come. The indoor materials will allow all my future classes to learn what happens below the soil as a plant grows, and to understand where good nutrition begins.
