Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Public speaking has become a lost art among our youth. I would like to foster this skill by teaching it to my students. By having them produce commercials and short plays based on novels they read in class and then critique them, I hope to improve the public speaking abilities of our future leaders.
My students are seventh and eighth graders in a middle school.
Many are second language learners who are very reluctant to speak in front of their peers on a formal basis. We are in a district with a very large Hispanic population and many students have never had the opportunity to do any public speaking. Oral speaking is an important part of our state standards. I would like to focus on this skill, because most teachers do much of the talking in the classroom with little participation by the students. I would also like my students to be able to view themselves in oral speaking activities so that they can improve their weaknesses.
My Project
I will use a video camera to record my students in various oral speaking activities, such as student-produced commercials based on novels that they have read in their language arts class. I hope to give them more opportunities to speak in front of peers, using techniques that I teach them in class, which will help them become successful and confident public speakers.
Accomplished public speakers are more ready to impress in interviews to compete in the job market.
A first impression is important. Support for my project will encourage my students to step into leadership roles, as well as to become productive and contributing members of society.
