"I am a 7th grade English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher in a very poor area of Brooklyn, NY. My students come from all different countries around the world. I work in a school that has very limited access to adequate technology. Our classroom computers rarely work properly. The internet is constantly down, the printer rarely works, and it is impossible to save the students' work on floppy disks since the disk drives don't work either. The state of the technology in my school makes me very sad, as it is contributing to the digital divide. My students deserve to learn about and use the same technology as students in wealthier schools.
Computer skills are necessary for future academic and professional success, and my school is failing miserably in providing the students with the skills they need. Therefore, I am requesting one new laptop computer for my classroom. The laptop will be used by all the students for internet research, word processing, creating websites, and for connecting to a projector to make presentations. The laptop will also be used in completing our "Self-Portraits with Frida Kahlo" project, in which students will create an internet mini-museum displaying the self-portraits they painted. I am requesting a MacBook from Apple with a carrying case. The MacBook comes with built-in wireless internet that will work in my classroom. Please help us enjoy this awesome technology together. Thank you so much! The cost of a MacBook computer with shoulder bag from Apple.com is $2,376, including shipping and fulfillment Ms. O. sent this note after the project was fully funded: Dec 18, 2006
