Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a Title I school in the heart of Brooklyn. At SPHS, about 79% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Despite taking health classes in the 9th grade and receiving advice from teachers, students still come to school with unhealthy, sugary snacks. Others come to school with nothing at all.

In an attempt to promote healthy habits while also supporting a proper balance of nutrients for brain development during the learning process, I'd like to stock my classroom with a variety of healthy snacks for my students.

Often times, students exhibit negative behaviors because they are hungry or are so hyped up on sugar. I'd like to end that cycle.

My Project

It has been a struggle as an educator to hear students complain about how they are hungry, their stomachs hurt, or they are dizzy, all due to lack of nutrients. While they are provided a school lunch, many students opt out of cafeteria food. Sometimes it is a choice, but sometimes it is for social reasons. And so they go all day with no food or unhealthy candies from the bodega.

I hope to stock my room with snacks that will not get in the way of learning while consuming, but that will also provide students with the proper nutrients for a healthy body and mind.

I often buy snacks out of pocket, but this year has proven to be financially difficult for me. I don't want to let my students down. They expect me to be the nurturer, providing them with snacks throughout the year.
