Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a third grade teacher in East New York. I teach in P.S. 345 located in Brooklyn. About 98% of our children in this school receive free lunch. Many of the students in our school are far below reading level. My students are eager to learn and highly motivated. Unfortunately, many of my students don't have books to read at home or someone to help them. Every day for the reading block period in my school I work with my students in small groups. My students range tremendously in reading levels. I have students that range from j-n reading levels. We have books in our school that are shared among the teachers but not enough teacher's guides and some are missing. My students would benefit from a large selection of guided reading books that range in reading level. They would especially benefit from non fiction books. I would then have teacher guides that go along with the specific books being used. This would enable me to teach more productively to them. This program can also be used for future classes to improve their reading comprehension and fluency. The program created my teachers aligns to No Child Left Behind, including rigorous guided practice in comprehension, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, and fluency. This program has books in the content areas which enhances the students knowledge in Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics. Finally, with the implementation of this program in my class it will surely boost the interests of my students and help me meet their needs. Thank you for considering my proposal.
