Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is comprised of preschoolers classified as being mild-moderately autistic. I believe that facilitating gross motor skills and group game play will assist them in future mainstreaming/inclusion opportunities.
My students attend a special day class five days per week.
They are a great group of boys, with deficits in mainly their communication and social skills. I believe that encouraging their ability to navigate outdoor play and work on specific gross motor skills will serve them well when integrating with typically-developing peers.
The playground they have is just a play structure and a few trikes. They would benefit from some more choices for outdoor fun.
My Project
If provided with these materials, we could work on specific skills that would enable them to effectively play group games. I would set up obstacle courses for them and use the hoops to practice bouncing and catching a ball.
We already play group games (e.g., duck, duck, goose and red light/green light) but I see these materials as offering the opportunity to work on specific skills. I'd like my kids to be able to stand their own on the playground, so to speak.
These materials will be used by my class, the special day class next door and future classes for years to come.
You will be assisting kids who are already at risk for being "last-picked". I'd like to lend the joy of gross motor movement and basic skills that may move them from that "last-picked" position. Thank you so much for considering my project!
