Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a book-aholic. I am constantly purchasing more and more books for my classroom. This is becoming a very expensive habit and I need some help! I don't think I will ever be satisfied with my classroom library, but this project will definitely be a step in the right direction!
I teach 2nd grade in a rural area of FL.
My school has a very high percentage of students who receive free or reduced price lunch. Many of the students' parents do not speak English at home. We are an inclusion school which means most special education students are fully included in regular ed classrooms. Also, we are a school without walls, which creates its own set of challenges. This year, my students are a group of "transitional" students who did not meet grade level expectations in first grade but are being "administratively placed" in 2nd grade rather than being held back. They are all below grade level and struggle with reading. It is my challenge to get them on grade level by the end of the year - this means more than one year's growth in one year! I choose to teach these special kids because I love seeing their growth. Please support my students!
My Project
I recently read a wonderful book called "The Daily 5." It gives ideas for changing the Literacy Block to include more independence and choice for students. One of the five components of the Daily 5 is "Read to Self." During this part of the Daily 5, students read books to themselves quietly or silently. We learn about different genres and try to be "voracious readers!" As you can imagine, this requires an extensive classroom library to provide for the different interests and ability levels that span any given group of students. I have a fairly large classroom library (mostly purchased with my own money) but I always find that I am lacking books on certain subjects, such as character education, manners, and accepting others' differences. So, I am requesting 7 different book sets to help fill these gaps in my classroom library.
Your donation will help give my students a more well rounded experience in reading this year and for years to come!
