Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Learning about caring improves our relationships with each other and will help us throughout life. Halo is our rabbit who helps us learn about relationships, science, math and nutrition. Her new weekend webcam will let us learn in class and at home. She will inspire us to read, compute and eat well.

Our urban middle school class is small because we use a functional curriculum.

Each student has an individual education plan to assure we have our needs met. Having a bunny gives us a source of positive interaction and we enjoy the hands on learning with our furry friend, Halo. Unlike some of our other friends at the middle school, we are in the same classroom for most of our subjects. Halo is with us whenever we are in our classroom. When we are not in our room, the webcam will let us keep watch over Halo and learn more about her needs and routines. What does she do when we aren’t here? The weekend webcam will keep Halo online with us. We can take turns observing, reading and using examples with Halo even when school is out. All of our Middle School can watch Halo on the web too. The new rug in her area is like a “Twister” mat and we will be able to gather near her cage and create games for learning with the spotted rug. We like activities that help us see and feel what we learn.

My Project

Halo brings happiness to our classroom this year. We have new friends in our class at the middle school and it was great to receive Halo as a gift from the new principal. We are learning about rabbits, how to care for them, what is best for them to eat, what kind of space they need and how to hold and pet a small animal. When we need a friend, Halo is glad to be with us and we like all the new ideas about having a class mascot. We can read to Halo because she is a good listener and we think of new ways to apply our learning to bunny care. We calculated the best size cage by measuring, adding and dividing and we measure food and learn about eating right. Halo loves vegetables, but sometimes eats things that aren’t good for her (like a broom). We will eat more servings of vegetables every week and keep a chart using our math skills. The shavings and water bottle will help keep the Halo Habitat clean. Our rug will give us an area for visits and a weekend webcam will let us keep watch.

Hands on learning gives multisensory experiences encouraging positive interaction.

The functional curriculum is flexible allowing bunny examples to enliven learning. This engages students with real world applications for math, science, nutrition and relationships. Students read to Halo promoting literacy. We write about our experiences and see the importance of living things. A web cam will always let us stay connected. Having an optimal area for Halo assure that students can enjoy our pet.
