This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My journalism students are working with 10-year-old computers. In this highly technological age, that is difficult. We are slowly, computer-by-computer, updating our classroom in order to have equipment that allows us to easily and effectively publish our school newspaper and website.

Our high school is in a large urban area and the student body is 90 percent minority.

Despite being in a fairly middle-class neighborhood, we cater to the lower-income population in our area. Many of these students do not have computers at home. Their main access to the Internet is at school. But in journalism, they learn to research information on the Internet, write articles, take photographs, lay out a newspaper and create a website. I want to provide an environment where they can compete with journalism students from the most affluent school districts. My journalism class tends to attract the school's top college-bound students who would like to share the same playing field as other top journalism students from California.

My Project

I am requesting one desktop Apple computer. I have 17 Apple computers in my room, and about 10 of them are still Operating System 9! They are over 10 years old and we can no longer use the Internet on these computers because the browser they support has been out-of-date for years. I previously requested two Flip video camcorders from Donors Choose, and was happy to see that donors quickly covered the cost. I have acquired our collection of Apple computers slowly, via teachers or companies who were replacing them with another model. Now I hope to modernize our journalism classroom, with the help of DonorsChoose donors. With a new computer, more students will be able to quickly do research for their article for the school newspaper or website. Newspaper editors will be able to use the latest software for newspaper design. The website editor will be able to quickly put articles and photos online and keep our website up to date.

We need new computers!

The important job of covering the news is increasingly becoming a web-based industry. High school students need to work on the latest equipment in order to learn the skills necessary to compete in the world of journalism, which is so important to our society. My large journalism class is stymied by old computers that can't access the Internet or our networking system. In order for my program to grow and win awards, we need new equipment.
