In our high school, elective classes are limited by availability of textbooks. We are slowly building an elective base so that students have a variety of elective choices. We need the texts to offer a new Culinary Art course.
Our secondary school site serves students who have children, are behind in credits, or have emotional and personal needs that keep them from attending a traditional high school.
We also serve home-schooled students. These young people are determined to finish high school and earn a diploma. We have a bridge program with the local community college and encourage our seniors to continue their education after graduation.
My Project
We currently offer a Food & Nutrition course that has benefited our students by providing information on lifestyle choices for wellness. This a prerequisite class for Culinary Arts. We have been able to fund the Food and Nutrition class, but now need the texts for the Culinary Arts course. We feel it is essential that students understand the fundamentals of a variety of cooking techniques, meal planning, healthy eating, basic equipment and sanitation practices, along with the basics of how to prepare for a possible employment future in the food service industry.
In our small program, we are faced with cutbacks.
Often our students are not offered classes that could potentially help them make decisions about their future by letting them experience new ideas and practices. We hope that adding a Culinary Art course will expand students' knowledge base and encourage them to consider another possible career choice.
