Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Adults are suspicious readers about current events. But many of my students come from homes where newspapers are nonexistent. Weekly Readers will help students 'see world events', and then 'Click and Capture' to create a photographic current event journal based on the information read.

This year I have 35 students.

Over half of the class are second language learners, and a third of my students have learning disabilities. However, my students are bright and eager learners. Our school is a performance arts magnet in California. Once a week, students from kindergarten through fifth grade are involved in music, dance, and drama. Students also have opportunities to audition for plays, musicals, and dance productions. My students are excellent artists, and have taken interest in photography. However, we are a Title I school and 100% of students receive free and reduced lunches, and due to severe budget cuts we are not able to purchase Weekly Readers and a digital camera.

My Project

My project is for my students to apply what they have read, and using a camera, create a photographic journal. Students will read Weekly Readers to learn to become 'suspicious' readers. These are readers who learn to ask deeper questions such as... "What are the slants and biases of the article?", "What is left out of the article and why?", or "Who are the intended audiences?"... By asking and understanding questions with more depth, students will learn to read with a 'critical eye' that will help with comprehension. Students will select articles to read and evaluate throughout the year. They will use the Weekly Reader articles as model texts to help them pose questions to interview family members and others for interesting topics, events, or problems to solve. Students will then write and illustrate a collection of current events in a photographic journal as a celebration and tribute to their families and communities.

When students read about the lives of others they may or may not relate to the issue or event at hand.

But if they are asked to critically look at their community events, both celebrated events and problems that need to be solved raises a sense of social awareness. I want my students to be critical thinkers and future problem solvers. When they go through the process of creating journals that are meaningful to them, it opens the door for a better understanding of world events.
