Have you ever wanted to read a book with your child not knowing if you child would enjoy it because he/she was non-verbal? Reading words to your child with the incorporation of basic sign is a challenge my students and their parents face everyday!
We are a preschool special education classroom in a center-based, low-income school in Southern Ohio.
We are a DIVERSE mixture of preschoolers with special needs learning alongside typically developing children, ALL ages 3-5. We love books and fun activities in the classroom! What we lack in verbal communication, we make up for with sign language to help us learn!
My Project
The use of early sign language has been shown to increase receptive and expressive language development. Not only do we incorporate daily sign language into reading thought the classroom, but we want to create a "READ and SIGN" 40-book check out system to allow the students to take a book home so their families can READ and SIGN to them too!
My students love to be read to in my classroom, but many of my students are non-verbal and need basic sign incorporated with the book.
With the creation of this "READ and SIGN" 40-book check out system, we will take some of the books that our school has purchased along with new books and placing 1" sign language stickers inside the pages to help illustrate the story. A book, a file folder game, a toy/puppet and an activity will then be placed inside a "Book Buddy" bag so that the students will be able to take the book home, learn the signs, and foster the joy of reading.
With the help of donors like you, my class will receive the opportunity to enjoy new books together as a class and children will be able to learn sign with their families to create meaningful learning across environments!
