No More Imaginary Baseball!

My students need basketballs, kickballs, jump ropes, and other playground equipment to use during recess.

My Students

Help put an end to imaginary baseball! During recess, my students are left to play "imaginary" baseball, because all of our recess balls were stolen over the summer. It's heartbreaking to watch my students swing an imaginary bat at an imaginary ball.

My fifth grade students this year are very respectful and creative.

When they discovered we no longer had balls and jump ropes for them to play with during recess they did not complain once. Instead they started playing "imaginary" baseball and "imaginary" kickball. My students have great imaginations, but during recess they should be able to play real games of baseball and kickball. Many of my students come from low income homes. Due to Illinois' budget problems, our school does not have the extra money to replace the stolen recess equipment.

My Project

Games of kickball and basket ball teach our students teamwork and good sportsmanship. Many of my students spend their evenings at home taking care of younger brothers and sisters, so they do not get to join in neighborhood games. During the day, I try and teach good sportsmanship and teamwork skills, but the best way is for the students to go out and play ball! Recess is a great chance for my students to become interested in a sport that might one day lead to a college scholarship. Currently, my students spend most of their recess time just standing around bored. With the new recess equipment I am requesting, including basketballs, kickballs, jump ropes, and other playground equipment, my students will become more physically active.

When I was a student in school, some of my favorite memories are of games during recess.

At this time, my students are not getting to make these memories. The news talks about childhood obesity, and about how lazy our children are becoming. Recess is the time during the day where children are to run, jump, and play. The new recess equipment will help my students become more active, and fight off obesity and laziness.
