Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Smile and Say Cheese! My class is planning a field trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. We are trying to create a digital journal to record our science investigations and activities. Journals & camera are needed so that the students may record, download and print their pictures for their journals.
We are a second grade class in Central CA.
We are located in a rural, farming community. We have a low socio-economic status. Our students and parents fundraise for all our money for the field trip. We have no help from our district. Most of our students have never been out of our immediate area - much less to the ocean.
My Project
Can you remember the first time you saw the ocean waves? When my students see the waves crash the first time- they usually think it's a one time thing. The ooohs and aaahs that occur when the waves crash again and again can never be equaled inside the classroom. Our rural community is in the desert and ocean waves are not common. My students need 30 Journal books and a digital camera to begin their project about digital journaling. A journal of their experience will help them remember this trip for years to come. The memories that are created will last a lifetime!
This is a once in a lifetime experience for the students.
I have taught for many years and most of the children who go on this trip never again visit the ocean. It is too far away and is far too expensive for the majority of the students in our district. Having these journals will allow them to revisit this adventure in learning for years to come. Additionally, they will be able to share these journals with their own children when they are in second grade.
