My Students

Do you remember your favorite picture book as a child and having your teacher, mother, father or sibling read it aloud to you with enthusiasm and character? We want our children to hear books read aloud by different people in our English Language Learners classroom.

Our students are refugees from Burma.

They have fled Burma due to political and religious persecution. More than 90% of our students live beneath poverty levels and their families are unable to help them with learning to read and write in English because they too are learning. Unlike many students, our students are grateful for the opportunities in America for a free public education. They are disappointed at the end of the year that they cannot come to school all summer!

My Project

I would love to have a listening center with the books "Buzz, Said the Bee" and "Pocket Full of Kisses" for my translator to use in her pull-out classroom with our English Language Learning students. She could have 3 students learning at the listening center while 3 other students are working in a small group with her. Our school budget has been cut so I can no longer procure these items through school budgeting.

Listening to books being read aloud will help students with fluency and inflection in their own reading.

Hearing books in the language they are learning (English) will also be helpful in improving English skills.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
