My Students

"Return to Sender" is a beautifully-written story of immigration told from two perspectives: a dairy farming family in Vermont and the child of an undocumented worker who lives on the farm. A class set will allow my developing readers to share a novel with engaging and relevant themes.

My students are building stronger reading and writing skills as they master a new language in my Language Arts classroom.

We come from six different countries and a variety of backgrounds, but we all share some kind of immigrant experience. Many of my students have had interrupted schooling and most read years below grade level. Unabridged sound recordings of the books we share provides important comprehension support for my developing readers.

My Project

"Return to Sender" is the award-winning tale of a Vermont farming family's struggle to hold onto their dairy farm. Immigration is explored carefully from a variety of perspectives, including that of a young girl who has immigrated with her father and been separated from her mother. We will use a shared reading of "Return to Sender" as a central text in our exploration of immigration issues. My students will be inspired to read, write, and discuss because this book explores immigration issues which are very important in their lives. This is a book which will hold my students' interest and leave them asking for more!

A class set of this novel and an unabridged sound recording will allow my students to read and enjoy a grade level text which is sure to become a favorite book for many.

Sometimes it takes just one book to transform a reluctant reader into a real bookworm; for some of my students, "Return to Sender" will be the one!
