Film Study & Movie Making Project

My students need a video camera and memory card with which to write, direct, film and edit their own short films based on the short stories and novels we read in class.

My Students

There are many different ways to improve reading comprehension among students, but none better than the visual medium of film. That's right, I want to show my students movies to teach them how to become better readers.

I teach Language Arts and Drama to a range of students with a mixture of abilities--from GATE to special needs and everyone in between, including one very clever boy with autism.

They are a diverse group of eighth graders from various parts of the world, who are engaged when technology is included in the curriculum. They enjoy reading, working with their hands and creating fun projects with their friends. The school they attend is in suburban area oddly constructed in a commercial business park that is considered a sister city to Silicon Valley. Technology is used on a daily basis.

My Project

Many people believe watching movies is a big waste of time, but I believe teachers can help students develop the type of analytical skills by watching film that can in turn be used to analyze short stories, novels and other art forms. The unit I'm developing uses, John Golden's, Reading in the Dark:Using Film as a Tool in the English Classroom, where he discusses camera angles, lighting, sound, etc., to show a director's purpose. Similar skills can also be used when analyzing literature, so my hope is that students will become better readers by being introduced to these concepts visually. The materials I'm requesting are one video camera and the flash memory card to record the short film they will write, direct, act in and film based on their collective interpretation of the literature we read in class. Using a film making kit (http://www.tabletopmedia.org), I hope to help students strengthen their analytical, reading comprehension, collaborative skills while using technology

Donations to this project will make a tremendous difference in the lives of my students, especially at a time when education needs innovative curriculum to engage students in ways that get them working collaboratively, thinking critically and using technology as they would in the real world.

I hope you'll consider helping foster creativity in the lives of my students. Thank you for considering this project.
