From Movies to Mythology

My students need 75 copies of the extremely popular book The Lightning Thief as they begin the fall semester.

My Students

If I had a nickel for every time a student asked, "Miss, did they make a movie out of this book and can we watch it instead of read it?", I'd be a millionaire.

My students are an inquisitive group of high school teenagers who are often inhibited by their environment but have an amazing amount of potential.

They attend a large high school of over 2,500 students (98% black and Hispanic) where it can be a struggle just to get through the day without incident and the squeaky wheel definitely gets the attention. Most of them, however, don't squeak and they can feel lost in such a large and overwhelming environment. They're good kids who need to be encouraged to stand out for positive reasons and find joy in learning.

My Project

It is my sincere hope to be able to get my students to see movies as a stepping stone to great literature. By supplying each of my Freshman students with a copy of The Lightning Thief, I hope to show them that books can be even better than their movie counterparts. I plan on using the movie version of The Lightning Thief as an introduction to Greek mythology. From there, we will read the book, giving us more in depth information about the gods and goddesses, while allowing students to make comparative assessments between the two. We will then continue to work backwards and learn about each god/goddess individually and make the connections to the subtle references in The Lightning Thief. Since this book is the first in a series, I'm hoping this will lead to their continued interest in the topic and they will continue reading on their own.

I truly believe that this project will teach my students to appreciate Greek mythology and to recognize that books can often offer more than a movie because it allows them to use their imagination and not be limited by another's vision.

Also, owning their own book, to write in and underline as they see fit, may inspire them to go out and buy their own copy of other books as well.
