Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

El que sabe dos idiomas vale por dos (those who know two languages are valued as 2 people). My students are living by this everyday and are trying their best to learn two languages at a time.

The majority of my students come from low income homes in California.

As a charter school we struggle every day to give these students the necessary materials and knowledge they need to close the achievement gap. This third grade class is very much invested in making sure they reach their goals. They work well together and always help their group members.

My Project

The resources my class is requesting will help them begin reading more fluently. Although they are third grade students, many are reading at a 2nd grade level. We are requesting Spanish books because there are very few textbooks and resources for Spanish Two-Way Immersion classrooms. These books will give them access to another genre that is not in their textbook. The fluency phones will be used when students are silent reading. It is shown that when students hear themselves read or read aloud their fluency can increase. Once their fluency increases, reading comprehension will be much easier for them. We plan on using the iPOD touch to record the children reading. Then we can make Cd's with their own reading and they can take it home to practice fluency. Students can also use the iPod touch in a center by uploading a book to read. It is shown that having a reading model helps students increase in their fluency.

Practicing fluency in third grade is extremely important.

Third grade is the transition where students are reading to learn (kinder to second students are learning to read). Many students are not at the point where they are reading to learn because they have yet to develop their fluency and word attack skills. We believe that these resources will help motivate students to reach their goals in reading.
