My Students

The special needs preschool children in my class face the many challenges that accompany growing up in poverty. Preschool geometric concepts are embedded in growing minds through block play. Materials in my classroom were new 20 years ago, but now need to be replaced.

The multi-categorical special needs preschool children in this classroom attend a rural/urban elementary school with over 70% of students qualifying for free or reduced meals and textbooks.

At first glance this classroom appears to be full of regular preschool children enjoying their first school experience. A closer look unveils children with developmental and physical challenges such as autism, language, and speech delays, genetic anomalies, physical deformities, hearing impairment, and environmental delays. The joy that these children experience in learning through play is truly gratifying and uplifting.

My Project

I am requesting supplemental materials for our classroom block play area that will encourage children in explorations that foster pre-math and social skills. Our classroom unit blocks are timeless and do not wear out, but transportation toys and play people do not last forever. By providing a variety of these materials, concepts such as counting, sequencing, color identification, differences, sameness, shapes, estimating, predicting, motion, gravity, and more are fostered and then embedded in these growing minds. Providing play people of a variety of ethnicities and careers the help preschool children see beyond their own neighborhoods. Social skills built through play are vital tools helping our children succeed in a wider society.

Children's brains continue to grow to about age 5, after age 5 the child learns to make use of the brain that is already developed.

We are working hard to give our students many experiences that will help their brains grow. With this growth is increased potential for the students' future. In this era of decreased school funding and an expanding population of special needs children monies for enhanced classroom materials is scarce. Your contribution to this project is appreciated.
