Geometry City II (Next Year's Students)

My students need different art supplies, such as tempera paint, paper, glue, foam board, and cardboard to help them construct a 3-D geometry city.

My Students

GIS Project Based Learning. I am a high school GIS/AutoCAD teacher. I recently left a STEM school to teach GIS/CAD/Earth Sci at a charter school. I teach 9th-12th Grade. Our school has a wide mix of races, income levels, and SPED. I find that students perform best under project based learning.

Students and teachers at our school often work off donations.

I recently left a school with a lot of money and supplies to teach at a charter school that doesn't have much money for supplies and student projects. I am wanting to continue project based learning in my new school, but that takes materials! I find that students connect better with math and science if they can see a real world touchable example. In GIS class I mostly teach software, but I like to take the students away from the computers and do hands-on project based learning. In the past in the city project my school was located in a run down area, so I had to students redesign their neighborhood in 3-D, using geometric principals, such as surface area, volume, parallel lines, vertical angles, etc. Students usually struggle with spatial concepts. This project allows students to not only physically create these concepts in 3-D, but it opens their eyes up to the math around their city.

My Project

My students need different art supplies, such as tempera paint, paper, glue, foam board, and card stock to help them construct a 3-D geometry city. Last year the city project was such a great success. I am working on continuing the city project again. Students will be looking at geographical data related to population and why people live where they live, then they will move on to analyzing boundary data and why boundaries are put into place. From there they will develop their own city either digitally on the computer or in 3-D. Regardless they have to have so many parallel streets, vertical angles, transverse streets, perpendicular streets, alternate interior angles, etc. Furthermore, they are assigned roles, city planner, parks and rec, architect. Within these roles they have to decide how the city should fit and run. Subjects covered in this project include, spatial reasoning, math, group work, writing, geography, etc.

Spatial reasoning has become a lost art in our youth.

Teaching a mapping-based software course allows them to connect back to the environment that they live in. Creating a city gives them the tools to take pride in where they live and realize what aspects of a city bring the city to life and what aspects run the city down. Even though I mostly teach technology I like to bring spatial concepts to life by allowing the students to use their hands and "create." Engineering is creating!
