My Students

With the competing distractions of texting and reality TV, my students are finding it more and more difficult to engage in sustained reading. Please help supply an engaging class set of novels that will have our students begging for more!

The majority of entering 6th graders are ill-prepared for the rigors of middle school.

Many are English language learners, and even the majority of those who aren't begin the school performing below grade level. To elevate instruction beyond remediation, the school requires students to produce an "exit project" at the end of each grade, which involves investigating and devising solutions to community problems. For instance, a student may investigate and suggest ways to improve a local playground, or survey traffic patterns within a 10-block radius of the school to highlight deficiencies in the flow of pedestrians or cars. The theme of "scientific inquiry" reflects the administration's desire to stimulate the curiosity of its students, although beyond the "exit project," which is overseen by the science instructors, the school doesn't have a heightened concentration of science in the curriculum.

My Project

This winner of the 1999 Coretta Scott King John Steptoe Award tells the story of a young African-American girl who is tormented by her peers because of her darker skin. Maleeka Madison is a 7th grader at McClenton Middle School. She often gets teased because her skin is "too" black. She hangs out with Charlese, who is reffered to as "the baddest thing in school". She smokes in the bathroom and makes Maleeka do her homework. One day, they were going to break into school at night. Then, trouble happens... But at the end of the book, Maleeka learns to accept herself for who she is, not the color of her skin. I highly recommend this book; it is very inspiring!

Please help supply an engaging class set of novels that will have our students begging for more!

When students lead literature discussion groups, more students participate in the discussion, they are more actively involved in the discussion, and students take more responsibility for reading and understanding the text.
