My students need an efficient color printer and paper so their teachers can create a variety of visual communication systems for them.

My Students

Help us communicate! Many of my students are learning to communicate with those around them. They use a variety of methods to communicate, but the easiest is with pictures. We will be able to create these pictures on the spot to help our students communicate with us.

I teach 11 students in a kindergarten/1st grade combination class with severe disabilities, ranging from intellectual disability to Cerebral Palsy.

My students come from a variety of backgrounds and environments, and often need special accommodations to help them learn in the best possible way.

My Project

Nearly all my students are nonverbal and are learning to use words or symbols to communicate. Often pictures are the easiest way to start communicating, and these brightly colored pictures must be printed on paper! To do this, we first create symbols that the student will use, insert them into what is called an augmentative assistive device, and then record what we want the device to say. When the student presses the picture, it talks for them! An efficient printer would make this process absolutely painless. We would be able to create on the spot adaptations to help our students communicate with ease.

My students are at the vital stage of development where they are beginning to communicate.

They need the chance to have as many different modes of communication as possible: words, sign language, and pictures. I will be able to make new forms of communication on a daily basis to keep up with my students' curriculum. A fast and efficient color printer will help my students learn to communicate with ease.
