My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time someone actually believed in you? My students struggle with this concept on a daily basis; however, I continue to instill in my students that they have the ability to make the world a better place. And they most certainly will!

Many of my students come from broken homes and are being raised by their grandparents, another family member, or a family friend.

However, my students aren't looking for pity when it comes to their lives; they are simply self-motivated students who want to achieve their dreams--part of that is to graduate high school and, with high hopes, be accepted into college. Reading is not enforced at home, and tight finances do not afford most of my students the opportunity to purchase books. Moreover, some students can't make it to the public library due to a lack of transportation, or the need to babysit a younger sibling or family member. Our school's funding for the library has been cut which means we are down to one librarian and no after school hours. After discussing a few book options with my students, we decided that the class would read The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. This would serve as a springboard into our nonfiction unit, as well as an inspirational read to enjoy and discuss.

My Project

Mr. Pausch's optimism and insight has provided many readers and dreamers with encouraging words of wisdom and a more positive outlook on our lives. Through his darkest hours and an unbelievable amount of physical and emotional pain, the late author, Randy Pausch, always made it his mission to remind people that we all have the ability to achieve our dreams. Through Mr. Pausch's work, I am attempting to remind my students how much they have to offer to our world, and that no dream is too big or too small. My students have been so intrigued with the small amount of information they have been given about Mr. Pausch that some have taken to researching his life, his dreams and his last lecture. It is this kind of self-motivation that drives me to create this project and ask for assistance in fulfilling our request. I know my students would be thrilled and beyond grateful to hold in their hands a brand new book . One that they have selected as a group, and can learn a great deal from.

My students deserve quality reading material that will inspire them as well as assist with their reading levels and reading strategies.

There is so much to be gained through reading this book. Please join me in my quest to remind students that to read is to succeed. With your assistance my students will also learn that there are people willing to share in their future and who believe they have the ability to achieve great things in life. I appreciate your time and interest in this project.
