This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever seen a shy student step out of discomfort and into the spotlight when they knew their voice would be heard?

My students are 105, eighth grade students who I am training to be vocal, responsive, critical, and thoughtful.

The school is 98% free and reduced lunch with students living in poverty, surrounded by gang and drug violence, 68% English Language Learners. These populations have historically been silenced within our educational system. Our goal is to give these students a voice to express their reality and to ensure that that voice does not quaver later in life in high school, college and the workplace.

My Project

I would love to be able to record the intense and important conversations that students have throughout the year for multiple reasons. First of all, for accountability to the words they are speaking. Students get real when they know someone is listening. Secondly, I will be able to play the discussions and we can analyze for higher level explanations, inconsistencies in logic and speaking and to improve overall quality of speaking. A final reason why I would like digital recorders is to be able to upload their discussions to their individual student websites that they will be creating this year. Multimedia websites will give students a world wide audience to showcase their knowledge, thoughts and experiences.
