This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Were there only men authors?" This is a question often overheard in my English classroom. While we love and respect the stories of male authorship, a balanced literary perspective is necessary in today's world.

Coming from a working class community, my students understand the hardships in their lives, but they do not choose to use them as excuses for failure.

Our urban school has a unique and diverse student population; this only contributes to the lively and informed conversation in the classroom. It is evident that the basic needs of our students are seldom a priority and, because of that, school is a struggle for many. Compounding individual circumstances are the funding and budget issues so prevalent today. It is difficult to obtain new books and we are forced to use old, outdated, and torn books, not knowing when they can be replaced. Although this seems like an aesthetic concern, it translates to a poor learning environment. Moreover, new literature is rarely ordered therefore preventing our students' exposure to a diverse range of authors and texts. Our school has made significant academic strides within the last few years and I hope to continue this trend through my teaching.

My Project

With these books, my students will be able to explore a unique narrative that is largely marginalized in standard curriculum. A young female protagonist is faced with difficult decisions and confronts tough issues that many students, regardless of gender, can relate to. An engaging piece of fiction, "The Bell Jar" also serves as a "gateway" text to other genres, such as the short story and poetry. Its universal themes permeate the story and generate critical thinking so important for college preparation. Many English skills and concepts can be utilized with this text; characterization, vocabulary, and symbolism are just a few examples for possible study. Even more exciting is the historical and sociological potential with Plath's book. Gender and socioeconomic issues are abundant within the text consequently adding a crucial cross-curricular component as we read. Here, outside research would be an engaging and exciting way in which to supplement the reading.

A class set of Sylvia Plath's "The Bell Jar" would revolutionize the way in which many students perceive literature.

They will be exposed to uncommon female roles and unexpected plot twists. This text will make a profound difference in my class as we seek to make important connections to the curriculum. "The Bell Jar" has the ability to facilitate better reading, writing, and, most importantly, critical thinking required for higher education.
