This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Verbally communicating is difficult for non-verbal students with autism. However, a small device such as the ipod touch, can open up a world of communicating with friends, teachers, and family.

I teach kindergarten and have ten students with autism.

We are at a school that is 80% free lunch, and 90% second language learners. On our campus we have four special day classrooms that mostly have students with severe autism - many of whom are non-verbal. I used the ipod touch for the first time in my kindergarten special education classroom this past year, and it was an amazing tool. One of my non-verbal (formerly screaming) students was able to use it to communicate! He went from screaming when he wanted something to using icons to formulate sentences (like, "I want rice microwave please.")

My Project

Having the ipod touches in my classroom will give my students a voice! With apps such as proloquo2go, students who are unable to communicate are able to push a button to speak for them. For example if they wanted to go outside, they could push corresponding icons on the touch to say, "I want to go outside!" Instead of having to pull an adult towards a door or just run outside, they could use words to tell someone what they wanted or needed. Having the touches will also give my students with autism another (tactile, verbal, and visual) method of learning concepts that are difficult for them, not just the traditional pencil and paper method that is often difficult for my students. My students will be able to use their words to tell me what they need or to tell me an answer to a question instead of being frustrated and acting out when they can't communicate what they want to.

My students will go from being frustrated and locked in by their speech delays to being able to communicate what they need.

They will be able to answer simple questions such as, "What do you want to do today?" or "How many rabbits are there?" with a voice of their own, with the help of an ipod touch. Or they will simply be able to turn to a friend, and say, "Do you want to play?"
