Learning To The Beat Of Our Own Drums

My students need safe and durable rhythm instruments to participate in Music Therapy Activities that I have learned to help them with language and motor skills.

My Students

Have you ever watched a child bang on something with that wild-eyed, "this is the BEST thing in the whole world look?" My students love music, but I need safe and durable, professionally made instruments to share with them, so they do not get hurt.

I teach in a multi-age classroom with children that have moderate to severe disabilities on the Autism Spectrum and developmental delays.

They are a wonderful and vibrant group of kids from five to eleven-years-old that learn through hands-on activities. Regular music classes leave them without the kinds of activities they crave and respond to by the time they are out of kindergarten, so when we are fortunate enough to have a Music Therapist provide consultation or sessions, because of a certain student, I always try to learn from her and adapt her ideas to carry over with the other students. They respond to language through music so much better that just talking, signing, or showing pictures.

My Project

I learned from the music therapist that rhythm can promote better fine and gross motor skills as well as better fluency when speaking. She brings out abilities in the students with amazing skill using a metronome and instruments like drums, bells, and rhythm sticks. Unfortunately, she only comes once a week. With my own durable and safe instruments I hope to carry over the activities that she has taught me and encouraged me to try with my students. I am not trying to take her place, I wouldn't dream of stepping into her shoes, but I can do my small part to play rhythms and provide activities that promote the skills she is teaching when she comes to our room.

To bring all my students together into a social group is not exactly for the faint of heart.

There is incredible acrobatics in chairs, odd noises, and lots of hand over hand modeling. A great sense of purpose and humor is very helpful to have on hand. When my students sit down to a musically tailored group to teach and reinforce concepts, they are transformed from sometimes resentful or fearful, to excited and willing to make choices and communicate to be a part of what we are doing.
