Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most students come to my class with little computer competency. Due to budget cuts computers have not been located to my side of the school. The computer labs are designed primarily for 7th and 8th grade classes. Access to computers is low. Our goal, one laptop per child in my class. Let's grow!

All of my students come to my class speaking a language other than English.

Our classroom library has only a few books in Spanish and no bilingual books or books in Arabic, Korean, or any of the other languages my students speak. I teach math, science, and history for new and beginning English Language Learning students in a high-need community. Students speak a variety of languages including Spanish, Japanese, Thai, Arabic, and Tagalog. 80% of students receive free or reduced lunches. Additionally, their educational experiences have been diverse. A few students attended private schools in their home countries, and others students have been out of school for a few years before entering the US public school system. My students need hands-on materials, visualizations, and extraordinary experiences to fuel their curiosity. Computer competency is necessary for my students to be prepared for college.

My Project

As you can imagine, the uses for these netbooks will be endless! Students will be taught how to use the netbooks for various math, reading, science, art, and writing activities. For math, students will have a chance to visit math websites, such as Math Whizz, to play educational math games that will reinforce crucial skills. In reading, students will go on Quia, which is a website with games teaching grammar and reading comprehension. During writing, students will learn to type papers on the computer using Microsoft Word. Along with activities focused on math, reading, and writing, students will have opportunities to conduct Internet research for science and social studies projects, use other educational websites, and create multimedia presentations. Using the computers for these tasks will save students time, while increasing productivity and learning. Plus they will become familiar with the computer skills necessary for college.

Our goal is one computer for each student, and these computers will bring us closer to that goal.

We have no computers for student use now. Thank you for your consideration and desire to make a difference in the lives of students! Through generosity from people like you, eventually, all my deserving students will have the opportunity to have daily access to a netbook computer, preparing them for a life of continued education. By investing in these students, you are investing in the future of America.
